I too think that photographs on book covers to be a mistake, and these depicting an obviously C21 young woman doesn't do the book any favours. K M Peyton wrote in deliberately short sentences because she believed that contemporary readers were less able to deal with longer ones. I'm about to re read the first book in order to decide whether it'll be suitable as a class teacher read book for 7-8 year olds. A school trip will be to visit Colchester Castle, so the context of the book could be very fitting.
